HOW TO USE THE TAKAPUNA LEAD

HOW TO USE THE TAKAPUNA LEAD

Our Takapuna Lead was designed to be ridiculously useful without adding bulk or fuss. There’s no fixed handle and no one way to use it — you create the handle each time you clip the swivel hook to the D-ring. The result is a lead that adapts to you, your dog, and whatever the day throws at you.

We never recommend leaving any dog unattended, but if you’re grabbing a coffee, ducking briefly into a shop, or sitting at a café with friends, this system keeps your dog secure without the usual tangles.

WHY WE DESIGNED IT THIS WAY

Most leads have a fixed loop handle. Ours doesn’t — and that’s intentional.
The Takapuna has a swivel hook at each end and one D-ring sewn onto a leather tab about two-thirds down the lead. Your handle is created by clipping either end of the lead to that single D-ring.

Clip the end closer to the dog to the D-ring → long lead, short handle
Clip the end further away to the D-ring → short lead, long handle
Clip both to each other → doubled-over setup

Because the handle opens and closes, you can also loop it around small or large posts when you need quick, safe control. The whole point is flexibility: one D-ring, two swivel hooks, multiple ways to walk and secure your dog without a fixed loop.

SURPRISINGLY HANDY IN EVERYDAY LIFE

You can wear it hands-free across your body, clipping it at your hip so it stays put on the walk.
Attach your poop bag holder to the D-ring so everything stays in one place.

ADJUSTABLE LENGTHS

The Takapuna Lead adjusts to three practical lengths:

Doubled over: 85 cm
Long handle / short lead: 115 cm
Short handle / long lead: 140 cm
Webbing width: 2 cm

A QUICK NOTE ON SAFETY AND COMMON SENSE

The adjustable setups are helpful in different situations. If you’re tying your dog on a footpath near a curb, the doubled-over (shortest) option keeps them close to the post and well out of harm’s way. If you’re sitting at a café or in a busier outdoor setting, a shorter setup also helps keep things tidy and tangle-free. With more space, you can give them a little extra length. As always, use your judgement — especially around roads, bikes, or anything moving past.

It’s suitable for most dogs (around 80%). If your dog is large and a very strong puller, you may prefer a wider lead.
If your dog is under 3 kg (Pomeranian, Chihuahua, Toy Poodle), we recommend the Papamoa Lead instead — the Takapuna’s leather tab and hardware sit too low for tiny dogs, can become a trip hazard, and are simply too bulky at that scale. The Papamoa is built specifically for little dogs: the tab is smaller, the hardware is lighter, and the whole lead is roughly half the weight.
